Is Chatting with AI Cheating? Emotional Affairs and Relationships

Imagine discovering that your partner has been having intimate conversations with someone else.
They share their worries, frustrations and perhaps even their sexual fantasies. They turn to this person when they feel lonely, misunderstood or disconnected.
But there's something different about this relationship.
The other person isn't human. It's an AI chatbot.
Would you consider this cheating?
Chatting with AI isn't automatically cheating. But when conversations become romantic, sexual or emotionally intimate, they can raise questions about trust, secrecy and the boundaries of a relationship.
And perhaps the question isn't simply whether AI intimacy counts as cheating, but what these interactions mean to the people involved.
Why Do People Become Emotionally Attached to AI?
There's something appealing about feeling understood without having to explain yourself too much.
AI chatbots can offer reassurance, attention and responses that feel personal. They're available whenever we need them, and they don't respond with the frustration, distraction or disagreement we sometimes experience in human relationships.
For someone feeling lonely, rejected or emotionally disconnected, this can be comforting.
You might find yourself sharing thoughts you haven't told anyone else. Perhaps you explore desires that feel embarrassing, or talk about difficulties you've struggled to communicate to your partner.
Over time, these conversations may begin to feel emotionally significant.
Research is beginning to explore these experiences. Studies of AI companionship have identified potential benefits, including perceived emotional support, alongside concerns about dependency and the impact on human relationships.
But developing an emotional attachment to AI doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with you or your relationship.
As a therapist, I'm interested in what the interaction provides emotionally.
Is it the AI we're becoming attached to, or the experience of feeling consistently heard, accepted and understood?
For some people, AI may provide a useful space for reflection. For others, it may become a way of avoiding difficult feelings or conversations.
Understanding the difference can be important.
When Does Chatting with AI Become an Emotional Affair?
Emotional affairs aren't always easy to define.
For some people, they involve romantic feelings towards someone outside the relationship. For others, secrecy or sharing a level of intimacy that feels exclusive to their partnership may be what makes the experience painful.
AI adds another layer of complexity because there isn't another human involved.
Someone might spend hours talking to an AI companion, sharing personal experiences, exchanging romantic messages or engaging in sexual conversations.
Their partner may experience this as a betrayal, even though no physical contact has taken place.
But not every intimate conversation with AI is an emotional affair.
Using ChatGPT to reflect on relationship difficulties, explore feelings or prepare for a difficult conversation can be helpful.
What matters is the context and the meaning of the interaction.
It may be useful to ask yourself:
Am I keeping these conversations secret because I'm worried about my partner's reaction?
Am I turning to AI instead of expressing something important in my relationship?
Have these interactions started affecting my emotional or sexual connection with my partner?
Would I feel uncomfortable if my partner were having similar conversations?
These aren't questions intended to create guilt.
They're opportunities to become curious about what's happening.
The absence of another human being doesn't necessarily mean the absence of relational consequences.
Is Sexting with AI Cheating?
Sexual conversations with AI can raise particularly complicated feelings.
Some people use AI for erotic roleplay, exploring fantasies or expressing desires they find difficult to share elsewhere.
For some couples, this may feel similar to pornography or erotic fiction.
For others, the interactive nature of AI makes it feel more personal.
Unlike traditional pornography, a chatbot can respond to someone's preferences, participate in conversations and create an ongoing sense of intimacy.
But sexual fantasy itself isn't necessarily problematic.
From a psychosexual therapy perspective, I don't believe there's one universal definition of what constitutes acceptable sexual expression within a relationship.
What's important is understanding the meaning of the behaviour and the agreements between the people involved.
Is AI providing a space for curiosity and sexual exploration?
Is it helping someone express desires they've struggled to understand?
Or has it become a way of avoiding rejection, anxiety or difficulties with intimacy?
The same behaviour can mean very different things to different people.
And something that feels acceptable in one relationship may feel like a significant boundary crossing in another.
What If Your Partner Has Developed Feelings for AI?
Discovering that your partner has developed a romantic or emotional attachment to AI may leave you feeling confused.
You might wonder whether you have the right to feel betrayed when the other person isn't actually a person.
Perhaps what hurts most isn't the AI itself, but discovering that your partner has been sharing thoughts, affection or sexual intimacy that feel absent from your relationship.
You may begin questioning whether you're still desired, understood or emotionally important.
Meanwhile, your partner may struggle to understand why something they consider harmless has caused so much pain.
These differences can make conversations particularly difficult.
Betrayal isn't always just about what happened. It's also about what the experience means to each person.
Rather than immediately deciding who's right or wrong, it can be helpful to explore what feels painful and what the AI interaction has been providing.
Perhaps it offered companionship, fantasy or emotional reassurance.
Perhaps it became a way of coping with loneliness or avoiding difficult conversations.
This doesn't mean dismissing dishonesty or minimising someone's hurt.
It means creating space to understand what happened and what might need to change.
Can AI Replace Human Intimacy?
AI can create an experience that resembles emotional closeness, but human relationships involve something different.
They involve two people with their own feelings, needs, vulnerabilities and boundaries.
Sometimes we misunderstand each other. We disappoint each other. We struggle to communicate.
And sometimes we find ways to repair those moments and feel connected again.
AI can offer reassurance without requiring the same kind of mutual negotiation.
That may be part of its appeal.
But I think there's something important about learning to feel emotionally safe with another person who doesn't always respond exactly as we would like.
Research into AI companionship is still developing, and we don't yet fully understand the long-term effects of emotionally intimate AI relationships.
Rather than assuming AI companionship is either harmful or beneficial, I think it's more useful to remain curious about how it affects someone's emotional wellbeing and relationships.
How Can Relationship and Psychosexual Therapy Help?
AI-related intimacy may be relatively new, but many of the feelings it brings up are familiar.
Loneliness. Rejection. Sexual curiosity. Shame. The need to feel wanted, understood or emotionally safe.
Sometimes the difficulty isn't where we initially think it is.
A couple might come to therapy because one partner has developed an attachment to AI.
But underneath that, there may be questions about trust, emotional distance, sexual dissatisfaction or difficulties expressing vulnerability.
E qually, the AI interaction may have little to do with the quality of the relationship and more to do with someone's personal experiences or emotional needs.
In my work as a psychosexual and relationship therapist, I'm not interested in deciding what your relationship should look like.
My approach is collaborative and non-judgemental. We can explore what's happening, what it means to you and what you would like to feel different.
That might involve rebuilding trust, understanding sexual or emotional needs, or developing clearer agreements around technology and intimacy.
There's no single set of rules that works for every relationship, whether monogamous, open or polyamorous.
What matters is finding ways of relating that feel meaningful, respectful and sustainable for the people involved.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI Cheating
Can you have an emotional affair with an AI chatbot?
People can develop genuine feelings of emotional or romantic attachment towards AI. Whether this is experienced as an emotional affair depends on the relationship's agreements, the nature of the conversations and their impact on trust.
Is having an AI girlfriend or boyfriend cheating?
Not necessarily. Some couples may feel comfortable with romantic AI companionship, while others may consider it a breach of their relationship boundaries. It's important to understand what fidelity means to each person rather than assuming everyone shares the same definition.
Can a relationship recover from AI-related infidelity?
Yes, rebuilding trust may be possible. It often involves acknowledging the hurt, understanding what happened and agreeing on boundaries that feel meaningful to both partners. Relationship therapy can help support these conversations.
Final Thoughts
Artificial intelligence may be changing how we seek companionship, reassurance and intimacy, but perhaps the questions it raises aren't entirely new.
What makes us feel understood?
What happens when we struggle to express our needs?
And how do we navigate the boundaries between fantasy, privacy and betrayal?
I don't think we need to approach these questions with fear or judgement.
Instead, we can become curious about what our interactions with technology might reveal about the ways we connect with ourselves and others.
Because perhaps the most important question isn't simply whether chatting with AI is cheating.
It's what that connection might be helping someone feel, avoid or understand about themselves and their relationships.
